Happy 2 Month Birthday, Landon!

I know it's cliche, but I can't believe Landon is already 2 months old!  Time really does fly.

We went to the pediatrician on Wednesday and she was very happy with his progress. He now weighs 12 lbs, 5 oz and is 23 inches long. That's the 75th and 50th percentiles, respectively. He is really starting to "talk" now too, and the smiles just keep getting bigger. He also mimics when we tell him to open his mouth or stick out his tongue. Very fun stuff.  One of the best things recently is his ability to stay awake and happy for much longer periods of time. We sat for about an hour and just talked and looked around the other morning. Before, he would have been bored in no more than 15 minutes. Also great is the fact that we have had no more colic episodes since the surgery. He is just as happy as can be most evenings, which we love. We're still working on getting him to sleep longer periods through the night, but I know we're blessed because at least he typically goes back to sleep pretty quickly after waking up. Now we just have to try to reduce the number of times he wakes up....  :)

This week we also signed Landon up for preschool, starting in August. They have 3 adults to 8 babies, which is the best ratio I've found, and it's a relatively new school so their facilities are great. They have a very detailed but fun cirriculum as the kids get older and they have great activities and cleaning procedures for the babies. So I think he'll be happy there. We're going to ease in starting the first week of August, so hopefully by the time we really have to drop him off for an entire day we and he will be ready. I'm sure he'll do better than I will those first few times!

I took some great pics of him today, capturing some of his many expressions. Enjoy!

This is his very cute "MAD" face...we are to the point now where it just makes us laugh because it's so severe. BTW, he doesn't always cry after this face, sometimes he just makes it to let us know he is not happy.

I took this last weekend - he looks like such a big boy here!

Landon's First Road Trip and Playdate

Today we went to College Station to meet Landon's newest second cousin, Asher, who is about 4 weeks younger.  At first I thought Landon looked way bigger than Asher, but when we laid them next to each other, the only real difference was that Landon is more filled out. It was really cool seeing the two of them together.  We had a great time hanging out with Signe and Rodney, Asher's two older brothers Ethan and Owen, and Aunt Pam, Uncle Denny, and Stephanie.  Here are some pics from our big road trip/play date!

All four Texas "Jansens" (by blood at least, if not by name!):

I LOVE this one of Stephanie and Landon!

And to top off the day, we saw a double rainbow on the way back home!

By the way, Landon is doing great after his surgery ... we couldn't be happier. He is obviously feeling much better - many more smiles and long periods of contentment. Praise the Lord!

Pyloric Stenosis Update: The full story

As most of you know by now, we've had a very eventful week.  I thought I'd share a little of the background, for those who are curious.  About 2 weeks ago now, Landon started vomiting about 1 or 2 times per day and spitting up in large quantities a few more times each day. When he vomited, it was typically about 15-30 minutes after eating and it definitely originated from his belly - you could feel it coming on because of the spasms in his gut.  Although I could never say it was definitely projectile, it was definitely different than typical spit-up and the amount was more as well (think bath towel, not burp rag).  So after a few days of that, I took him to the pediatrician, who ordered an ultrasound on him to "rule out pyloric stenosis".  [Pyloric Stenosis is a thickening of the muscle at the base of the stomach that prevents food from passing into the small intestine].  The doc talked about how rare that was (it affects only 0.24% of Caucasian babies) and how it was probably either just reflux or that he was a "happy spitter" because Landon never seemed bothered by the vomiting at all. Plus he was still gaining weight, did not seem dehydrated, and was having plenty of dirty and wet diapers. That was Wednesday and I couldn't get an ultrasound scheduled until Monday.  But I really didn't think it was P/S so I barely paid attention to that possibility or what would happen if it was P/S.

By Monday, Landon had not vomited for 3 days. He had dry-heaved once on Sunday but nothing came out.  And he continued to eat well, have dirty and wet diapers, and gain weight.  So I almost cancelled the ultrasound appt.  It required a 4-hour fast, so you might imagine how much I was dreading that, given that Landon typically eats every 2 hours during the day and the ultrasound wasn't until 1pm.  And he yells at the top of his lungs when he's ready to eat if you don't give it in a timely manner (we have determined it is not crying, but literally yelling, and we're still trying to figure out whose temper he got!).  Nanny Judy decided to go with me to the appointment to help keep him calm until he could eat after the ultrasound.  Thank God for that, especially as it all turned out!

Amazingly (prayers answered) Landon did awesome and did not yell much at all before the ultrasound. He was relaxed and slept most of those 4 hours.  We had the ultrasound and after a lengthy wait (of Landon still not being able to eat), the radiologist came back from conferring with the doctor and said "He has pyloric stenosis. You have to go to the ER right now and have surgery."  I think this is word-for-word what she said (talk about great bedside manner, huh?).  I about fell over from shock. I really did not think it would be P/S and was not even mentally prepared for the possibility.  Plus, I hadn't paid attention to what the remedy would be if it was P/S, so when she said "surgery," that hit me hard.

So we went to the ER, checked in, and were comforted by a very nice receptionist who said they do this surgery every day at this hospital so we shouldn't worry (we were at Texas Childrens in the med center in Houston).  That made us feel better.  After a few hours in a room in the ER (still no eating for Landon and amazingly, still a pretty calm baby), we were transferred to the NICU and waited for lab results. They said he would most likely have surgery that night.  Finally at midnight, it was time, and he was taken back for the surgery. It took about 1 hour and they went in through his belly button to correct the condition.  He tolerated it well and was out by 1am. He finally ate his first meal after his 17-hour fast at 2:30am.  Phillip and I were blessed to get a room at the Ronald McDonald House on that same floor on Monday night...we are so grateful for that place and this is just another example of why (see below for more on that).

We ended up going home on Tuesday evening around 5pm and were very grateful not to have to spend another night in the hospital.  Landon seemed relieved too.  Today (Thursday) all digestive systems seem to be flowing normally again and he doesn't seem to be in pain for the most part. He's still sleeping quite a bit, but he is also eating more than ever, so that's encouraging. We'll have a follow-up checkup with the surgeons in 2-3 weeks and hopefully we'll have good news then.

Anyway, thanks for all the prayers and well wishes during this. We felt them!  Here are some photos from the hospital stay.

He's already smiling!

Going home at last!

As an interesting side note, the Ronald McDonald House (RMH) has an interesting history in our family.  Both my sister and I were ADPi's in college, and the philanthropy for that sorority is the RMH.  So we both raised $$ for them during our respective 4-year stints in the sorority.  In 2002, our nephew Kaleb had surgery and his family stayed in the RMH in Tulsa for about a week.  Then in 2007, our niece Shiloh had a heart transplant and her family stayed in the RMH for about 2 months in Nashville.  Since then we have made an effort to provide a dinner for various RMH's in Houston once a year as sort of a payback. On Monday night Phillip and I were personally the recipients of the great service RMH provides.  Needless to say, we will be providing dinner for the TX Children's Hospital RMH this year! Let us know if anyone wants to help. :)

Thanks again to everyone for the support the past few days. We'll keep you posted!

Landon and the Houston Texans

We attended the All-Access night for the Texans this past week so Landon (decked out in Liberty White) got to meet some real live football players and see their locker room and training facilities. Very cool!

Here he is chilling in the players' locker room

And now he's going down the tunnel to the field (just like the players do on Sundays!)

All this excitement called for a quick drink break

Here's Dad's name on the wall with all the original season ticket holders

And Dad told him all about how fun it was to be there the first season

It was a great night! We just had to go home and chill out on the couch...

One Month Old Video and Update

Thanks for all the comments and commisserations about colic. We've been handling it pretty well and most nights it's actually quite minor compared to some stories we've heard from others, so we consider ourselves blessed.  Walks do a world of good so maybe we'll get in good shape while dealing with it.

I took this video of Landon today, which was his one-month birthday (already!?): http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Ss7xl1cKqsA

He loves laying on his changing pad and while he was happily looking around I thought I'd do some stretches. Before long I realized when I moved my arms, he moved his and got really excited, and his eyes were following my hands the whole time. So I grabbed the camera to try to catch some of it. As you can see, he's getting interactive these days and I think there are even a few smiles in here!  It's kind of long, but the beginning has the most interesting reactions.  You can also see how big he's getting...he weighed in at 10.2 lbs this morning.

The World with Colic

"I feel ... the way a happy new mother feels about her impossible, colicky, restless newborn baby -- I just don't care what it puts me through. Because I adore it. Because it's mine. Because it looks exactly like me. It can barf all over me if it wants to -- I just don't care."  -Elizabeth Gilbert in Eat, Pray, Love (talking about her love of travel)

This quote struck both me and my mom as we were reading this book this week. And guess what...it turns out Phillip and I have a precious little newborn with colic!  Luckily he is not always as bad as the quote makes it sound, but through it all, this describes how I feel so well.

We all agree this is a very vague, catch-all diagnosis that is completely unsatisfactory when you are trying to find a reason for why your baby cries, but Landon's bad spells each night perfectly fit the description. We definitely think it's digestion-related with Landon and have found some ways to make it better but haven't completely eliminated it yet. One night gripe water worked like a charm but the next it didn't. Putting him in the Baby Bjorn (see cute pic of him sleeping in the Bjorn below) seems to help comfort him and it makes all the bouncing during that 2-3 hour time period much easier as well.  Yesterday I started taking a non-dairy Probiotics supplement and I am upping my intake of bananas so he can get those "good bacteria" through his milk and hopefully balance out his gut flora, which is known to be one of the big differences between colicky and non-colicky babies.  So we're working with it and just hope to continue to see improvement.  The change in my diet to lactose-free, soy-free, spice-free has also helped although I'm still trying to figure out certain triggers that are less obvious that inflict him periodically throughout the day....yesterday I realized grapes (and grape jelly) might be hurting him, so no more grape-related things for now. And today is much better so far. I am thinking soy is less of an issue so next week I'm going to try to eat a little soy sauce during the day to see if he is OK with it. I heard a lot of comments on my last post from empathizing friends who have been through this - I appreciate all of those as I fight off my craving of ice cream every day!! :)

On an unrelated note, I came across this picture of Phillip as a baby with his parents...it just shows how right everyone has been when saying Landon looks like his daddy!  I put a picture of me here as well for comparison...he definitely takes more after Phillip.

And thank you Tom for the Astros gear and Jill for the London bear!

3 Weeks Old

Landon celebrated his 3-week milestone with Grandma and Grandpa Jansen's visit this week. They've seen the full spectrum of baby moods - happy baby to screaming baby!  He's growing so fast, as you can probably tell from the pictures. And when he's content, he's more fun every day.  But he has been experiencing some reflux and some digestive discomfort all week off and on so the guessing game of changing my diet begins. I eliminated dairy starting on Saturday afternoon, so we'll see how that affects him. Yesterday was much better until I ate some peanut butter, which obviously did not agree with him.  So I'm taking lessons from Aunt Kristy and cousin Sydney's experiences with food intolerances and going on a very conservative diet to see if we can ease his discomfort. I guess it's better for me not to eat ice cream every day anyway. :)  I'm grateful to learn from their experiences instead of starting from scratch with this guessing game!  Enjoy the new pictures below!
